NPS Calculator - Calculate your retirement savings

What is an NPS calculator, and what does it show?

An NPS calculator is an online tool that estimates how much you could save for retirement through the National Pension System. Enter your monthly contribution, current age and assumed annual return, and Bajaj AMC’s calculator projects your savings by age 60.

It shows your total contributions, estimated investment gains and projected NPS corpus, which is the two amounts combined. It also displays an illustrative allocation towards buying an annuity, a product that provides regular pension payments through an insurer.

Also known as a National Pension Scheme calculator or NPS scheme calculator, the tool lets you adjust your inputs to see how they affect your estimated retirement savings.

How does an NPS calculator estimate your retirement corpus?

The National Pension System is a defined-contribution retirement arrangement regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, or PFRDA. Contributions are invested through selected pension funds across permitted asset classes. The accumulated value depends on the amount contributed, investment performance, applicable charges and the investment period.

The Bajaj AMC NPS return calculator uses these variables to generate an estimated retirement corpus. It does not predict the amount a subscriber will receive because investment returns, annuity rates and NPS regulations may change over time.

The tool is most useful for comparing scenarios. For example, you can assess how changing your monthly contribution, starting at a different age or using a more cautious return assumption affects the estimate.

How to use the NPS calculator

The Bajaj AMC NPS calculator provides an indicative projection using three key inputs. Follow these steps:

1. Enter your monthly contribution: Add the amount you plan to contribute to your NPS account each month.

2. Select the expected rate of return: Use the slider or input field to enter an assumed annual return. NPS returns are market-linked and are not assured.

3. Enter your current age: Add your present age so that our calculator can determine the contribution period up to age 60.

4. Review the estimate: The calculator will display your total contributions, estimated gains, projected NPS corpus and the estimated amounts allocated towards annuity purchase and lumpsum withdrawal.

You can change the inputs to compare different contribution and return scenarios.

The calculator is an aid, not a prediction tool. It may provide only an indicative picture.

More About NPS Calculator

What are the benefits of using an NPS calculator?

The Bajaj AMC NPS calculator brings the key elements of an NPS projection together, helping you compare retirement-planning scenarios more easily:

Estimate your retirement corpus

Our calculator shows how your monthly contributions may accumulate by age 60 at the assumed rate of return.

Compare different contribution amounts

You can increase or reduce the monthly contribution to see how the change affects your estimated NPS corpus.

Assess the effect of your investment period

Entering your current age helps you understand how the remaining contribution period may influence the estimate. Starting earlier provides more time for contributions to compound.

Review contributions and estimated gains

The results separate your total contributions from the estimated investment gains, helping you understand how each contributes to the projected corpus.

Understand the corpus allocation

You can see how the selected annuity percentage affects the estimated amounts allocated towards purchasing an annuity and lumpsum withdrawal.

Compare other long-term investment options

NPS is one route for retirement planning. You can compare the NPS projection with our retirement calculator to assess your broader retirement needs.

You can also use the SIP Calculator to estimate market-linked mutual fund investments or the PPF Calculator to assess a government-backed long-term savings option. Investors exploring a diversified retirement portfolio can also learn more about equity mutual funds. NPS, PPF and mutual funds differ in their risks, liquidity, taxation and return structures.

NPS calculation formula: How is the retirement corpus calculated?

For fixed contributions made at the end of each month, the Bajaj AMC NPS calculator estimates the corpus using the future value of an ordinary annuity:

Where:

  • FV is the estimated NPS corpus.
  • P is the monthly contribution.
  • i is the assumed monthly rate of return, calculated by dividing the annual rate by 12.
  • n is the total number of monthly contributions.

The calculator uses the estimated corpus to determine the other displayed values:

Total contributions=𝑃×𝑛

Estimated gains=𝐹𝑉−Total contributions

Annuity allocation=𝐹𝑉×Selected annuity percentage

Estimated lump sum=𝐹𝑉−Annuity allocation

These calculations provide indicative estimates. Actual NPS outcomes may differ because returns are market-linked and can be affected by contribution timing, investment performance and applicable charges.

Example of an NPS calculation

Suppose Xerxes is 32 years old and plans to invest ₹25,000 every month in NPS. He enters an expected annual return of 13% in the Bajaj AMC NPS calculator. Based on his current age, the calculator uses an investment period of 28 years:

Calculator input or resultAmount
Monthly investment₹ 25,000
Expected return per annum13%
Current age32 years
Investment period28 years
Total investment₹ 84,00,000
Interest earned₹ 7,54,92,517.00
Maturity amount₹ 8,38,92,517
Minimum annuity investment₹ 3,35,57,006

Based on these inputs, the calculator estimates that Xerxes may accumulate ₹8,38,92,517 by age 60. This comprises his total investment of ₹84,00,000 and estimated earnings of ₹7,54,92,517. The calculator also displays a minimum annuity investment of ₹3,35,57,006, equivalent to 40% of the estimated maturity amount.

The results assume that the monthly investment remains unchanged and an annual return of 13% is earned throughout the 28-year period. Actual NPS returns are market-linked and may vary.

FAQs

What is a suitable monthly contribution for NPS?

There is no single monthly contribution suitable for everyone. The amount should reflect your retirement goal, remaining investment period, income, expenses and existing savings. NPS All Citizen subscribers are not required to follow a monthly contribution schedule, although contributing regularly may support disciplined retirement planning.

Can I withdraw from NPS before age 60?

Yes. NPS allows partial withdrawals of up to 25% of the subscriber’s own contributions for specified purposes, subject to the applicable conditions. Up to four partial withdrawals are permitted before age 60 or retirement, whichever is later, with at least four years between successive withdrawals.

Under the rules effective from 16 December 2025, an All Citizen subscriber may also qualify for a normal exit after completing 15 years in NPS or reaching age 60, whichever occurs earlier. An earlier exit is treated as premature. For a premature exit with a corpus above ₹5 lakh, up to 20% may generally be withdrawn and at least 80% must be used to purchase an annuity. Different provisions may apply to government and corporate subscribers.

What expected rate of return should I enter for NPS?

Use a cautious rate based on your selected asset allocation and investment period. NPS returns are market-linked and can vary across pension funds, asset classes and market conditions, so no assumed return should be treated as assured.

Is the NPS corpus taxable at maturity?

Up to 60% of the amount payable on closure or opting out of NPS may qualify for tax exemption under prevailing provisions. The amount used to purchase an annuity is not taxed at the time of purchase, but the pension subsequently received is generally taxable at the recipient’s applicable rate.

Eligible non-government subscribers may now withdraw up to 80% in certain normal-exit cases. However, the tax exemption continues to be limited to 60%, so any additional lumpsum withdrawal may have tax implications.

The tax information is based on prevailing laws at the time of publishing and is subject to change. Please consult a tax professional or refer to the latest regulations for updated information.

What is the minimum NPS contribution per year?

The current PFRDA circular does not prescribe a separate minimum annual contribution for NPS All Citizen accounts. It requires at least ₹250 when opening the account and ₹10 for each subsequent contribution. Requirements may differ for other NPS schemes or account types.

Who regulates NPS in India?

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, or PFRDA, regulates NPS in India. NPS Trust oversees the scheme’s assets and works to protect subscribers’ interests within the applicable regulatory framework.

Can NRIs invest in NPS?

Yes. Eligible non-resident Indian citizens can open and contribute to an NPS account, subject to KYC requirements and applicable FEMA and RBI regulations. Continued eligibility may be affected by a change in the subscriber’s citizenship status.

Is the NPS calculator free to use?

Yes. The Bajaj AMC NPS pension calculator is free to use, and you do not need to open an NPS account to access it. Its results are indicative and do not represent assured returns, a guaranteed pension or investment advice.

I have heard that pension maturity values vary between tier-1 and tier-2 cities. Is this true?

No. Your city’s classification does not determine your NPS maturity value. The amount depends on your contributions, investment period, returns and charges. NPS Tier I and Tier II refer to account types, not categories of cities.

Does the calculator help me determine the amount of tax I have to pay when withdrawing the money?

No. Bajaj AMC’s NPS calculator estimates your retirement corpus and an illustrative annuity allocation. It does not calculate tax on withdrawals or pension payments.

I have opted for the Auto Choice lifecycle fund offered by NPS. Can I use the NPS calculator?

Yes. Enter your monthly contribution, current age and assumed annual return. Under Auto Choice, your investment mix changes with age according to the selected lifecycle fund. The NPS calculator uses a single assumed return, so it does not automatically account for these changes.

Can a subscriber open more than one NPS account?

Eligible non-government subscribers can hold multiple NPS schemes under the Multiple Scheme Framework. These are managed through a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) at each Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA), with PAN linking the subscriber’s identity across agencies. This is different from opening duplicate accounts under the same arrangement.

Is it mandatory to open a Tier II account when opening a Tier I account?

No. A Tier II account is optional. You can open a Tier I account on its own and activate Tier II later. An active Tier I account is required to open a Tier II account.

Is NPS calculated monthly or yearly?

Bajaj AMC’s NPS calculator uses monthly contributions and converts your assumed annual return into a monthly rate to estimate growth. Actual NPS investments earn market-linked returns, rather than fixed interest credited monthly or yearly.
